Cee-Lo sounds almost identical to the version I have on wax, it's so dope. As Americans, we went from Classical music...To Big Band...From Jazz...To Blues...From Country...To Rock and Roll...and so on and so forth. But eventually, we land on a little thing known as "Hip Hop" in the 1980's. Hip Hop, along with many of the genres before it, started as an outcast in music development, but eventually moves on to dominant pop culture.
BUT, the past year or so, I've found myself drifting away from Hip Hop altogether and enjoying music for being music (And not a genre). Someone told me the other day that I have a "weird" taste in music, and I figured that eventually, that person will be a fan of the same style of music as I; in due time. But just like all genres of NEW music, there's always scrutiny. But I encourage everyone to accept the new. Do I think Hip Hop is dead? Nah, it just evolving into something else.

In the era of sampled songs and mash-ups, one might ultimately forget that there might be an original forefather to someones creativity. With that said, one of my all time favorite Electro/ Pop groups (The Gorillaz) have been put under the radar of a potential "illegal" sampling of a song, and the songs originator is not happy. According to www.nme.com, Reggae artist "Eddy Grant" is upset that Damon Albarn ripped off his 1983 jam, "Time Warp", without any credit thrown Grants way. Hmmmmmm. So I decided to check out "Time Warp", and ran across some striking similarities! I won't choose a side on this one, but here are both tracks. YOU BE THE JUDGE.

A unique cover by Matisyahu of the Kings of Leons' hit "Use Somebody". Towards the end, there's an interview with Matisyahu and he states exactly why he decided to cover the song, and admits he isn't a Kings of Leon fan, but really enjoys the song "Use Somebody". And I totally agree, the song itself will forever be timeless, but I can't honestly say I'm a Kings of Leon fan.

Jazz-OH rant....Volume 1

Today in my Films Studies class, we watched a film called, "KOYAANISQATSI" (Don't try to pronounce it, you might hurt yourself.), and I thought the film was REMARKABLE! This film is a documentary without words only using sounds and images to explain the movies direction; and Oh what a job they did!! Phenomenal cinematography, great message, slight humor (Although dry), but overall this was the most powerful documentary I've ever seen! Buuuut 90 minutes without words seemed to turn a few of my classmates off.

Although I'm no movie buff, or an art critic, I know a good film when I see one; and KOYAANISQATSI was an outstanding film. Now, I'm a little upset because the class seemed abashed towards the film, and I'm a little confused why. For one, HOW ARE YOU IN AN ART SCHOOL AND CAN NOT APPRECIATE ART AT ANY FORM? I'm so Appalled (Kanye Voice) at how the class sighed, and grunted, as if they being tortured unjustly. WTF!!!?? As my man Martin Lawrence would say, "GET TUH SHHTEEPIN", and stop bothering people who are actually enjoying the film. I also found it DISGUSTING that one of our poor-er looking classmates (I was laughing out loud as I wrote that...HA!) was on Worldstarhiphop.com watching Waka Flocka clips WITH NO DAMN HEADPHONES ON! Yo, I was actually ashamed to be black at that moment.....And I LOVE my Blackness, smh. But truthfully, as an artist in an art school, be careful of your judgement of other forms of media, it really makes you look like less of an artist and more of an idiot. Just my thoughts.

I once heard that it's "Never too late to appreciate something or someone", and thank God for that! As of late, I've truly become a fan DJ/ Electronica artist Moby, ever since running across his tunes via Pandora.com. It was actually the song "Porcelain" (Video below) that intrigued me in the first place. Its ambiant synths, and classic Hip Hop drum loops, with the subtle piano medley in the background (You know I love me some pianos...) Naturally, when I first heard the name Moby, I thought of the Eminem diss line from Em's song "Without Me"..."...And Moby, you can get stomped by Obie/ You 36 year old, bald headed f*g blow me/ You don't know me, you're too old, let go, it's over...NOBODY LISTENS TO TECHNO..." lol. So when I thought of Moby, I thought of a Hip Hop hating douche' bag...among other things...But I'd never thought I'd be listening to his music as I do now. Moby has been active since 1985 (2 years before I was born) and in 2010, I'm just now enjoying his tunes. But it's "NEVER TOO LATE"! Dont make the same mistake I did...

Music is timeless...Music is everlasting...Music is more than a "genre"....enjoy.

WHY ARE YOU STILL MADD?

Sooooo, the other night I got a text from a friend asking me to read a blog post about hip hop and the author's general distaste for it at the moment. The editorial was very entertaining, as the author spoke on the demeaning lyrics of rappers and lack of substance on the radio. All the while, I couldn't help but think to myself, "Are people still trippin off dat?" I mean, its 2010 now, I thought everyone knows the radio is biased. Nas declared it dead and I thought that's where the convo ended. Needless to say my curiosity made me read the entire article and ALL 36 comments. As I read the comments I noticed that responses from the readers (including the author) seem to blame and criticize the artists for the type of material they make. To me that's criticizing them for being who they are and expressing themselves. Not kool. Hip hop, to me, is a truly deep form of expression that can be interpreted many ways. I feel, at this point, that over-emphasized criticism quite honestly speaks more to about the complainer more than the complainee.

We all know that there should be more variety on the radio blah blah blah but money talks too loud to ever hear any good music on the radio so why waste your breath? One of the issues that stood out most was the message it sends to the kids. "Ohh the messages are too explicit for the kids" "There's too much sex in the lyrics" "Parents need to police their kids". WTF?!!! Police? I don't think our kids need more police, matter of fact how many hip-hop songs are there in opposition to police?...Aha! I got it. I think I know what the problem is. Let me take a stab at it. I think those of us still wasting energy are not in tune with our own self expression and we retaliate by taking it out on these artists (who seem to be doing a very good job of finding their own, if nothing else). We can get mad at Lil Wayne or Gucci Mane for encouraging a "party party party everybody get wasted" life style but that's their choice of expression. Besides, art imitates life and I don't care how "conscious" you are, we all know that every weekend people head out to the clubs and all different levels by the tens of thousand to do exactly what rappers reference in those songs. I think that maybe you are worried "for the kids" because you feel like you lack the ability to teach your own kids that there is more to life than just partying. I dont know though. I'm just speculating.

"Well what about the sex and raunchy lyrics Osa, that's just not right?" Let me say that I have to keep it real, I don't like the way sex and women are portrayed sometimes either but IT'S SEX! Who doesn't think about sex in some form or another? It's like one of the greatest feelings a human can experience. Its right up there with experiencing your first high or having an encounter from God or something. C'mon let's be real honest and admit that we don't want our kids to hear about sex on the radio because we are too uncomfortable with expressing it to our children in the appropriate manner. Its such a taboo subject that we haven't learned to embrace the beauty of sex even as adults therefore we don't know how to express the honest meaning of that sensation to our existence as humans. We expect our children to figure it out on their own and pray they don't have any kids along the way. I don't know though. Im just speculating. It would be silly of me to 1.try and "police" my kids and prevent them from that music (because they always find a way) and/or 2.expect them not to be influenced by it. They will def hear the raunchy stuff but best believe I'm a let them hear Dead Prez's "Mind Sex" to add some balance (this of course is in addition to the actual "talk" about sex at a young age).

I feel as though if we put all this negative energy we feed to radio artists into positive energy for "good" hip hop then maybe the radio might actually switch it up a little. I don't know though. I'm just speculating. All in all I think ALL artists (even hip hoppers) should be allowed to express themselves without persecution from some "holier than thou" critic. No matter how much we don't agree with another artists message, its important to remember that their art is their personal freedom. Just like your art does the same for you. Besides there is so much "GOOD" hip hop music out there that who cares about the radio anymore? At a certain point ALL artist share the same creative energy, that was used to create this universe, in order to conceive and express themselves through whatever muse they choose. I hope in this new year we can all start respecting each others art more and acknowledge every artists right to find their own personal freedom.

Apple, Apple, Apple..Eh. As many of you know Steve Jobs has announced the inception of the "iPad" to his currently thriving, and always growing brand Apple. Apple has always been known for providing innovative, and state-of-the art equipment. As we all know the iPhone has changed the way companies are creating phones nowadays with many companies rebutting the iphone with their own version of the "iphone killer". But today is all about the highly anticipated "iPad"!!!!!! Right...As an employee of Apple, I have already taken a couple of phone calls asking about this damn thing, and then listening to them go apeshit when they are told that the item is not quite available yet....

I honestly don't see what all the ruckus is about!. Yea sure like all Apple products it looks pretty slick, I'm sure it moves at lightning speed, and I'm sure the screen quality is more than impressive. Ok, now tell me other than being bigger than and iPhone and smaller than a Macbook...what is so special about it? Half of the people walking this earth already has an iPhone, and the number of Macbook users are growing at record breaking paces as of recent. So, what other than novelty purpose would this "max-iPad" do for me? Well let's explore, there is no 3g connection meaning it must run off a wi-fi network. Like most Apple products its equipped with itunes and can run apps and you can even watch movies. Email, and organizers are probably the most unique thing about the iPad, with the ability to check email from pop-up menus, but all in all to me it sounds like one big ass iPod Touch. So tell me what do you think of Apple's new gimmick..er, I mean product?

My cousin, and Live4 member Sean Aikens, is aiming for higher ground in order to pursue the life goal he has set for himself. He wants to attend F.I.T. (Fashion Institute of Technology) in New York, but he currently attends Morgan State University. I believe that every now and then, we as individuals must take a "leap of faith" in order to complete a goal of some sort (So I've heard). So, my homie has decided to chase his dream.

Why FIT? Since I have decided that I will transfer to the Fashion Institute of Technology I have been continuously asked this question, not just by the kind folks who will be reading this essay but also by family members, friends and peers. As many times that I have been presented with this question, not once have I had a problem with providing an answer.
I believe life is about finding what your passion is, embracing it, and enjoying it. My passion is the concepts of art, expression and creativity. Fashion is just that, expressing who you are through art, the art of what you are wearing. You express and define who you are through what you wear and your organic style. The idea of creating art for others to use as avenues of daily expression is an endeavor I plan on dedicating my life to.
I chose to pursue a degree in Menswear at FIT because I feel that while I know what I want to do with my life, however I want to execute my plans correctly. I want to take the right steps towards my goals and attending FIT would be an avenue to obtain professional advice, insight, and knowledge in a field that has constantly been evolving over the years. Being that FIT has offers the only Menswear programs in the U.S. I feel that the school holds a certain prestige of sorts. I have also discovered in my research that the Menswear program at FIT has an incredible job placement rate. Also I love that fact that FIT is in a city that provides so much inspiration and culture, New York (not to mention being the fashion capital of the world).
Being that I have taken previous college level Business courses, I feel that pairing them with a degree in Menswear would better equip me with the skills I need to accomplish my goals. I would be able to create clothing at a professional level as well as use my background in business to help market myself as a designer, as knowing how to market oneself is just as important as being able to create a garment.
I am sure that this presentation of my feelings has impressed upon you my motives for wanting to attend FIT. FIT will surely provide me a vehicle to reaching my goals in life and with my drive and passion behind me I am sure something great will become of my attendance at FIT.

Ok so I just saw that AVATAR movie (phenomenally schweet, I might go pay to see it next time). Anyway, now its all over CNN that folks are depressed from seeing this movie......where do I start? Maybe I should start with by asking a question. Are you f$*%in serious?!! Aight fine. Let me stop being an a$$hole about it. I can empathize. Despite the fact that this movie illuminates the beauty of the natural world and highlights the power of the human spirit as well as the goodness in man/woman, I cant forget that there are two sides to every story.

I mean sure there was a happy ending and all the people that should have lived, lived and those that should have died, died but I think we can all agree that this movie had a lot of depth. I think that if there is one thing to be depressed about it should be the fact that humans have been the ultimate evil towards planet earth and have been sucking the planet dry of her resources and when we tap out and devour one corner of the earth we move on to the next sector to do the same thing making us resemble a virus more than a part of nature that is supposed to live in harmony with what was provided to us here on earth and it is only inevitable that we will have to leave this planet in search of new space because we've turned this planet into a great big ball of shit!!!!! (see WALL-E and BATTLE FOR TERRA) or how bout the fact that humans are so ruthless that we will eradicate and and nullify the existence of an entire race of life in order to fulfill our selfish inharmonious goals which some of us can relate to more than other (see NATIVES AMERICANS or "AMERICAN INDIANS" and/or the over 7700 types of endangered species ). Thats quite depressing when U think about it isn't? <- END SCENE.

The point is....well...there is no point. Just this. There was so much beauty in the AVATAR movie. Why take out the sucky parts? We all know that the depression was already there before the movie. Maybe you feel depressed cause you can be doing more with your life, then do more. Maybe you feel like you want to feed your sense of adventure, go head and do it. Don't sit around and mope about it.

I think this movie inspires a new wave of thinking. It makes me want to return to the earth. Run around barefoot and go horseback riding in the nude. It makes me want to be one with nature. And if I can't do all that maybe I'll just try to recycle a little more. I definitely recommend this movie and encourage all of you to see it. At the very least AVATAR is a movie that gives a new respect for life and culture and what could possibly be depressing about that.

I was familiar with his voice because of the work he has done with the trip hop group UNKLE, but I could never put a name to the voice. I personally have never heard a Radiohead song prior to these songs, but I'm already becoming a fan. Also, if you're familiar with the song below this post (Us Placers.) well, that is a Thom Yorke song, completely sampled by CRS. Nonetheless, Yorke is an interesting musician with a knack for intriguing instrumentals and compelling/ thought provoking lyrics. Do yourself the honor of indulging in these two great tracks by Thom York, a true music virtuoso.

Please get familiar with the man, Joe Hahn. He is a serious inspiration for someone like myself. Hahn, differs from a lot of the virtuosos I've chosen to blog about in the past because, well, he's a DJ! But his track record is extensive aside from DJ-ing. He is multifaceted in many areas in media, aside from being the Disk Jockey for the American Rock band "Linkin Park". What amazes me most is that he went to Art School with Mike Shinoda!!!! (Art School FTW!). But in all seriousness, once I found out a band member from Linkin Park ACTUALLY DIRECTED the video for the song "Breaking the Habit", I was astonished. Rarely do members within a music group posses the skills to multitask their creativeness, and actually do extremely well. Here's some more info on Mr. Hahn and some of his works...

Joe Hahn, better known as Mr. Hahn, (born March 15, 1977 in Dallas, Texas)[1] is an American turntablist and director best known as the DJ for the band Linkin Park.
Hahn joined Linkin Park, after meeting fellow band mate Mike Shinoda in art school, when the band was called Xero in 1996 as the band's turntablist. Since then, he has directed music videos for most singles of Linkin Park, with the exceptions of "One Step Closer", "Crawling", "Faint", and "Given Up".

"A Rush of blood to the Head" is one of my all time favorite albums in existence. This album is by the British, alternative rock band "Coldplay" and AROBTTH is their second studio album, which released in 2002. What makes this album so great? One word, TIMING. I personally believe the best songs, albums, movies, whatever, focus on timing. Timing can be two things: 1) how it relates to your present, or 2) how far ahead of the present something is. AROBTTH consisted of both styles of timing, making it an instant favorite of mine. I was listening to the whole album at work one day, and as I was feeling depressed, "God Put a Smile on Face" came on, instantly brightening up my day. Then later during my work day, my manager was rushing everyone to complete tasks and then "Amsterdam" came on, hosting lyrics such as, "But time, is on your side, its your on your sideeeeeeee now....It's no cause, for concern....". Almost every song on this album has a song that fits a particular time or emotion in your life, now that's what I call timing!

AROBTTH also boasted hit songs like, "Clocks" (Which won a Grammy for Record of the year), "Warning Sign" and "In my Place" (Which won a Grammy for best Rock performace for). Coldplay won Best Alternative Album Grammy in 2002, and numerous other awards domestically. All in all, if you haven't heard the album, please give yourself the pleasure of doing so, I promise you wont be disappointed.
